After thermal noise, the second most important type of noise in digital cameras is called fixed pattern noise. A further advantge of our technique using a fixed tripod is that the star patterns move across the detector, so when the stacking software realigns them the fixed pattern noise is in a different position. That helps to smooth out this type of noise.
