The brightest 3,690 stars

The following table of 3,690 of the brightest stars is derived from catalogue IV/27, HD-DM-GC-HR-HIP-Bayer-Flamsteed Cross Index (Kostjuk, 2002), from the Centre de Données astronomiques de Strasbourg (CDS) at http://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/CDS.html. That catalogue provided all of the identifier columns except Tycho, along with position (J2000) and V magnitudes. Tycho identifiers and B - V colour indices have been added by looking stars up in the Tycho catalogue (tyc_main.dat, from the same source) by their Hipparcos numbers. Variability flags have been obtained by looking up in the Hipparcos catalogue (hip_main.dat, from the same source). Combining the data and generating the more accessible pages of tables here was done by a home-brew Java application which writes XML in a form suitable for my page-generation system.

The Morgan-Keenan spectral types of all stars with Hipparcos identifiers can be found at http://cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr/ftp/cats/more/HIP/cdroms/docs/vol11sp.pdf. I have not yet combined that information into the table.
