Comet C/2014 E2 (Jacques) in Cassiopeia 2014 Aug 24
Canon 50mm lens f/1.8 ISO 6400 Fixed tripod 90 x 10s = 15.0 minutes total
We saw this image at the beginning. Let me emphasise: it was taken on a fixed tripod. Stars do not trail, even in the 100% inset, because the rules were followed:
- A. Long exposure stacked from shorter ones, each short enough to avoid trails
- B. Highest standard ISO setting for this camera: 6400
- C. Wide angle fast lens (50mm f/1.8) at its widest aperture
The greenish blob in the inset is a comet. There are often a few comets around that can be photographed like this. They are not spectacular, being small and having no tails - unlike comets in photos you may have seen. The spectacular ones are quite rare.
