Letters mark reference stars of known magnitudes, for measuring the AGN's variable brightness

The object marked by the two lines looks like a star. Professional astronomers have examined the spectrum of its light and concluded that it is about 5 billion light years away.

That means that I have captured in my camera some light that was emitted before the Earth was formed - a staggering thought!
